Build, safety and good to know
Glass build
Laminated safety glass, for example 5 + 5 mm or 6 + 6 mm, chosen for size and position
Safety glass
Processed to SIRIM MS 1498 (this covers the glass, not the film)
Controls
Wall switch and RF remote as standard; Wi‑Fi / app, smart home and timer as options; dimming needs a dimmable transformer
Shapes
Curved glass and insulated (double-glazed) units are possible
With printed glass
Can be laminated with a UV-printed layer (not with fabric)
Certification
The film and the safety glass are certified separately
Sound
No sound rating is claimed without a test of the complete system
Haze figures
Measured on the film; a laminated panel is confirmed on its final specification
  • When it is on, it is clear but not as clear as ordinary glass — there is a slight haze, more from a steep angle.
  • When it is off, it is frosted, not blacked out: daylight still comes through, and shapes pressed close to the glass can show.
  • Holes and cuts are made before production. Finished Smart Glass cannot be cut on site.
  • Not for bathrooms near water, saunas or steam rooms — it runs on power.

For contractors

What the site needs.

Installed by ORE or an ORE Approved Installer in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. Elsewhere, supply only.

  1. A 13A power point

Your contractor brings a 220–240 V supply to the controller position. ORE does everything from there to the glass.

  2. An indoor place for the controller

Dry, ventilated and reachable for service — never sealed in a wall and never in a shower zone.

  3. A cable route

The cable leaves one edge of the glass. ORE sets the exit on the shop drawing and hides it in the frame, ceiling or a channel.

  4. Decisions before production

Sizes, holes, notches and curves are fixed before the glass is made. Finished Smart Glass cannot be cut or drilled on site.

  5. The right sealant

Neutral-cure, non-acidic silicone that is compatible with PDLC film. Acidic sealants can damage it.

  6. One transformer for the area

ORE sizes it with headroom: 50 W for about 8 m², 200 W for about 30 m², 300 W for about 45 m².

Questions

Good to ask.

What is Smart Glass?

Smart Glass switches between clear and frosted at the touch of a switch. Inside is a thin liquid-crystal (PDLC) film: with power on, the crystals line up and the glass is clear; with power off, they scatter light and the glass is frosted.

What happens in a power cut?

It turns frosted, so the room stays private. ORE's standard Smart Glass is clear only while it has power.

Smart Glass or Smart Film — which do I need?

Choose Smart Glass for new glass and Smart Film for glass that is already installed. Smart Glass has the film sealed inside laminated glass; Smart Film sticks onto your existing glass and can be replaced later.

Can I use it in a bathroom or shower?

Not near water. Smart Glass runs on power, so ORE does not install it in showers or beside basins. For shower glass, see ORE PureScreen.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, as a laminated or insulated Smart Glass unit, with the transformer housed where it stays dry. Stick-on Smart Film is not recommended where it faces long-term rain, sun and humidity.

Is it completely clear when it is on?

It is clear but not as clear as ordinary glass. There is a slight haze, more when you look from a steep angle — this is normal for PDLC glass.

Is it completely private when it is off?

It blocks a clear view but it is not blacked out. Daylight still comes through, and a person or object pressed close to the glass, or strongly backlit, can show as a blurred shape.

How much power does it use?

About 5 W per square metre while it is clear, and none when it is off. Mains power goes through an isolation transformer to about 60 V AC; ORE sizes the transformer with headroom for your total glass area.

What do I need on site?

A 13A power point from your contractor, an indoor place for the controller, and a cable route. ORE installs the glass and does the wiring from the glass to the transformer and controller.

How do I control it?

With a wall switch and an RF remote as standard. Wi‑Fi / app control, smart-home integration and timers are options. Dimming to part-frosted is possible too, with a dimmable transformer added.

How big can Smart Glass be?

Usually up to about 1.8 m wide, with the height following the glass sheet — about 12 ft. A wider area is made from more than one panel.

Can it be curved or double-glazed?

Yes. Curved Smart Glass and insulated (double-glazed) units are both possible, made to order.

Can Smart Glass be combined with printed or fabric glass?

It can be laminated with a UV-printed layer. It cannot be combined with fabric laminated glass.

Where has ORE installed it?

One public example is the Jotun office project, where Smart Glass is used in the office. More ORE work is on our Instagram.

Can it be cut or drilled after it is made?

No. Sizes, holes, notches and curves must be fixed before production; finished Smart Glass cannot be cut or drilled on site.

Is it fire-rated or bullet-resistant?

No. Standard ORE Smart Glass is not fire-rated or bullet-resistant; a project that needs either uses a certified specialist glass system.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off, then wipe with a soft cloth and water or a mild glass cleaner, keeping the electrical connections dry. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals.

What is the warranty?

24 months on the Smart Glass film and 12 months on the transformer and controller, for manufacturing defects. The glass itself, breakage, impact, water ingress and incorrect wiring or voltage are not covered.

How long from order to installation?

16–18 days after deposit for Smart Glass, and 10 days after deposit for Smart Film.

Where does ORE install?

ORE installs in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. Elsewhere in Malaysia ORE supplies the glass only, with delivery charged separately.

How much does it cost?

ORE quotes after checking your sizes and site. Every related cost is listed in the quotation.
